Emotional wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing, but it is sadly overlooked… As a part of the LGBT family, I am passionate about supporting the LGBT+ community to help to support their well-being, and I am proud to help people live more fulfilled lives, it’s a privilege to work in the field of helping others.
Sadly, half of those people who experience homophobic, biphobia or transphobic bullying will go onto have symptoms of depression. Older LGBT+ people have experienced ill-treatment because of their sexual orientation or gender identity in the past from authority figures, work or family. As a result LGBT+ people are more at risk of suicidal behaviour and self-harm than non-LGBT+ people.
When someone has experienced homophobia, biphobia or transphobia they may turn those feelings inwards and this may lead to having negative feelings about their own sexuality, this is called “internalised homophobia or transphobia”. If you come out and you experience rejection, you will not want to come out again, and this may make you feel you have to hide your real self, and this will contribute to your mental wellbeing - by speaking to a supportive friend or work colleague, may help to increase your overall sense of wellbeing and self-esteem.
